SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Luke Kuechly says even though the Carolina Panthers were No. 2 in the NFL in defense last season he sees plenty of room for improvement. Kuechly, the team's middle linebacker and last year's AP Defensive Player of the Year, points to early season losses to Seattle and Buffalo in which Carolina surrendered late touchdowns.

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - Panthers defensive end Frank Alexander says he won't appeal his four-game suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. In his first public comments since being suspended on May 2, Alexander says "I've done it, so there ain't nothing to appeal."

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis Grizzlies have hired Jeff Bzdelik as an assistant on Dave Joerger's staff. The team announced the decision on Thursday, but did not release details of his contract. Bzdelik went 73-119 as the Denver Nuggets' head coach from 2002-04.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Wake Forest running back Dominique Gibson has been suspended from the team for violating undisclosed team rules. Team spokesman Steve Shutt confirmed Gibson's status Thursday, one day before the Demon Deacons begin their first preseason camp under new coach Dave Clawson.
