Jeff Varner - WNCN: News, Weather

Jeff Varner

Writer, award-winning broadcast journalist, TV host, photographer, adventure-seeker, expert uncle, Jeff Varner does it all. Tar Heel born and bred, Jeff's southern demeanor, high energy, lively personality and trustworthy delivery have carried him to three Emmy nominations, hundreds of major television appearances, a "Rookie of the Year" award from the Associated Press and fill-in honors on "Live with Regis and Kelly."

A native of Greensboro, North Carolina, Jeff spent a large part of his adult life in New York and Los Angeles. His adventurous spirit and driven work ethic stem from his early years working hard on a tobacco farm. A creative and responsible youth, Jeff was editor of his high school yearbook and newspaper becoming the first person in his agrarian family to attend and graduate from college. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Jeff comes to WNCT from WPIX in New York City where he pounded the mean streets as a general assignment reporter.  Prior he was evening anchor at WWMT serving the Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Battle Creek market in Michigan, promoted from morning anchor.  He was also weekend anchor at WGHP in Greensboro and feature reporter at KCBS in Los Angeles.

Before moving into local news, Jeff worked several years covering entertainment stories across the country.  He's appeared on Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood and Xtra to name a few, and worked as a featured correspondent at E! News and TV Guide Network.  From Steven Spielberg and John Edwards to Tom Cruise and Jennifer Lopez, he's had one-on-one interviews with many politicians, stars and star makers.

A genealogy freak, Jeff can often be found searching archives and telling stories about his colorful ancestors.  He's most proud his family tree includes journalism forefather Edward R. Murrow.  When not planted firmly behind his laptop, Jeff can be found wallowing in his love for nature. A former hockey player, he loves winter sports, kayaking, camping and anything that pumps the adrenaline. He earned his black belt in Tae Kwon Do at the age of 15.  He considers himself most at peace when playing pretend with his niece and nephew, walking a beach at sunset and traveling alone.

Oh, yeah.  There was that Survivor: The Australian Outback thing, too.
