Former NC State coach O'Brien joins Virginia staff

Posted: Updated:

Former N.C. State head coach Tom O'Brien is heading back to the University of Virginia.

O'Brien, who was fired after the 2012 season at NCSU, was a longtime Cavalier assistant before moving to head coach at Boston College.

The Wolfpacker website, which is a part of the network, confirmed the hire, which was officially announced later Thursday. O'Brien will be associate head coach for offense and will coach tight ends.

O'Brien was an assistant in Charlottesville for 15 seasons, beginning in 1982, under former coach George Welsh. He became head coach at Boston College in December of 1996.

N.C. State confirmed Thursday afternoon that it had reached a separation agreement with O'Brien.

"We agreed to two decisions with Coach O'Brien," Wolfpack athletics director Debbie Yow said in a statement. "First, N.C. State waived his non-compete clause so that he could fully pursue other coaching opportunities.

"Second, N.C. State agreed to pay a lump sum of $200,000 as complete satisfaction of the university's obligation to pay liquidated damages under the remaining years in the contract."

Also, former Wolfpack assistant Jon Tenuta will become UVa's defensive coordinator.
