Fayetteville's 'Bicycle Man' gives away bikes by the hundreds

By Nbc17 Staff

Moses Mathis had been repairing donated bikes to give back to the community for 23 years.

The first year, he gave away one bike.

This year, he gave away 1,148.

“Christmas is about giving and we try to give as much as we can,” said Mathis.

Violet Darby said her daughter was one of the ones to get a bike Thursday, when hundreds came for his annual bike giveaway.

“All she has been asking for is a bike, so when she got her bike she was happy and it made me happy,” Darby said.

But the man behind the mission needs a place to continue the work. He gave away his bikes Thursday the intersection of Bragg Boulevard and Pamalee Drive.

“My lease runs out and we don't have the funds to lease it for another year,” Mathis said.

Mathis hopes someone will have a giving spirit so he can continue being the Bicycle Man and give back to little boys like Jaden, who said of he would name his bike, “Fastey."
