In a 911 recording released by Raleigh Police, the man charged with murdering his 10-month-old step-daughter told dispatchers that the infant choked on toilet paper.

Joshua Andrew Stepp, 26, has been charged with murdering Cheyenne Emery Yarley and first degree sex offense in connection with the case.

On Sunday night police were called to 1223-306 Silver Sage Drive in reference to an unresponsive infant.

"My baby just swallowed a whole, a thing of toilet paper, and she's not breathing. I'm trying to, like, resuscitate her right now. Her heart's beating, but she's not breathing," said Stepp.

During the six minute call the dispatcher is giving Stepp instructions on how to resuscitate the infant and Stepp can be heard counting compressions.

Yarley was taken to WakeMed where she was pronounced dead.

On Tuesday afternoon, Stepp appeared before a Wake County judge where he was given a court appointed attorney. He remains behind bars under no bond.
