Parents, students and neighbors from Johnston and Wilson counties rallied Friday night at Clayton Municipal Parkto support a teacher and coach charged with taking indecent liberties with a student.
The demonstrators are showing support for James McNamara, the Corinth Holders teacher and wrestling coach.
The demonstrators believe the school and Sheriff’s Department have unfairly accused him of inappropriate activity with a 16-year-old girl.
"We firmly believe Coach did nothing and that's why he didn't resign, he didn't take their offer to resign and go away quietly,” said parent Mike Grindstaff.
Grindstaff is one of the many parents who have shown up several times within the last month, to meetings, at the school, at restaurants and even in court, to show they support for McNamara. The coach has been off the job since March 7.
Students and parents believe the school board and Sheriff’s Department do not have evidence that he did anything wrong.
School system leaders insist the investigation is in the best interest of the children in Johnston County.
On Friday, Johnston County schools spokeswoman Terri Sessoms said in an email, "Mr. McNamara's employment status with the school system continues to be suspension with pay. The school system is continuing to conduct a confidential review of this situation and continues to cooperate with law enforcement."
