Police are investigating a shooting in Raleigh that left a teenager dead.
Officers were dispatched to 3801 Rolling Green Court around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday.
When officers arrived, they found 16-year-old Fernando Garibay-Benitez, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
In a 911 call released Thursday afternoon, the caller tells the operator, "Somebody just pulled up and they started shooting at him. They shot him and he's gone."
As detectives worked to find out who shot the teen, NBC-17 learned he did not live in this apartment complex.
His cousin, Chris Benitez, said the victim lived a couple of blocks away in the Foxhall neighborhood.
Chris says his cousin was supposed to be going to the store and he doesn’t know what he was doing at the apartment complex on Rolling Green Court.
He also says his cousin had been in trouble in the past, but—he described it “minor stuff; nothing like this.”
Police were called to the Lexington on the Green apartment complex after residents reported hearing 5 or 6 gunshot shots.
One young man said he didn’t realize how serious it was at first.
“I was like, what was that? It sounded like a gunshot,” said Curtis Handsome. “I just brushed it off my shoulder because I didn’t think it meant that much.”
Torrential rains from a passing thunderstorm shortly before 7 p.m. temporarily halted forensic work at the crime scene but it didn’t stop investigators from continuing with their inquiries.
Police said in a flier to residents that they are looking for a gray mini-van that was seen driving recklessly near Rolling Green Court and New Hope Road around the time of the shooting.
