UNC freshman from Charlotte found dead in Carrboro

By Nbc17 Staff

Carrboro police are investigating the death of a UNC-Chapel Hill student whose body was discovered late Saturday night.

The victim was identified as David Palmer Shannon, a first-year student from Charlotte.

Police said his body was found in the Brewer Lane area near Main Street.

Police said they did not know what caused Shannon's death, but said it appears to be an "isolated incident and there is no danger to the greater community."

UNC students were stunned by the news.

"It's a little jarring, like I don't know what to make of it," said Jackson Knapp, a Carolina student.

"I had a lot of friends who knew him," said Mickey Christiano.

Christiano said his friends spoke highly of Shannon. Several students said he lived in Granville Towers, and there were grief counselors stationed there Sunday.

"I woke up this morning and Facebook was full of statuses about how great of a person he was and everybody just really feels like this was an unfortunate situation," Christiano said.

Shannon's Facebook page said he liked music from the Dave Matthews Band and enjoyed reading "The Hunger Games."

Carrboro Police are expected to release more information Monday morning.

Anyone with information about Shannon's activies since Friday night is asked to call Sgt. Metz at (919) 918-7409 or Lt. Westbrook at (919) 918-7417.

The UNC Alert Carolina website carried a statement Sunday from Chancellor Holden Thorp: "As we grieve David’s loss as a campus community, our thoughts are with his parents, family and friends."

Thorp said counselors would be available Sunday afternoon. He said students could also call Counseling and Wellness Services at (919) 966-2281. Employees could contact the Employee Assistance Program at (877) 314-5841.
