Boy battling cancer gets special trip from Secret Service

DURHAM, N.C. -

This was a big week for Nathan Norman, 6, who is battling brain and spinal cord tumors. He's faced cancer since 2009.

He usually makes the two hour drive from his home near Lynchburg, Va to Duke Children's Hospital with his family.

But this week, they made a much different trip. Secret Service agents invited him, his parents, and three siblings to be their guests at President Obama's inauguration.

Nathan sat and watched the parade as President Obama and Vice President Biden walked past.

"We were picked up by Secret Service at 9:45 and he took us to a reserved bleacher section across from presidential committee box about five bleachers down and watched when Obama and Biden walked through during the parade. It was such a great experience," said his mother, Dawn Norman.

Last fall, Nathan told his parents he wanted to put up the family's Christmas tree early because it made him feel better. After that, he received Christmas cards from all over the world.

Nathan loves firefighters and law enforcement officers. When they heard about his story, they started flocking by the dozens to his home to see him.

The Sercret Service were among those Nathan met, which is how the invitation came to be.

As much as he receives, Nathan and his family also give back. The Norman family delivered hundreds of Christmas gifts to Duke Children's Hospital this past holiday season.

The Norman family is not short on thrilling things to do, in the spring they will be back to White House for a private tour. That invitation also came from the Secret Service, according to Nathan's mom.
