A  teen is now facing charges for his role in a fatal wreck that happened early Saturday morning in Johnston County.

William Lee Tippett, 18, of Garner, was killed when he was thrown from a red Ford pickup truck driven by Bryan Gilmore, 17, of Smithfield.

North Carolina State Highway Patrol First Sgt. Jeff Gordon announced that Gilmore is being charged with driving while impaired, driving after consuming alcohol while under 21 and reckless driving.

The investigating trooper says Gilmore was driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control and the pickup truck ran off the road, hit a ditch and overturned several times.  Gilmore and another passenger, Joseph Brewer, 16, of Clayton, were injured but were released after treatment at WakeMed.

The accident happened about 3 a.m. Saturday on Josephine Road in Johnston County.

A Johnston County Schools spokeswoman says Tippett and Gilmore were students at Cleveland High School.

Grief counselors will be available today at the school and a vigil is being planned by school officials.
