S. Carolina adding sand volleyball

COLUMBIA, S.C. -

Sand volleyball is coming to the University of South Carolina.

The Gamecocks will become the first team in the SEC to add the sport, which will begin in 2014, according to the Associated Press.

The move was approved Thursday by the school's Board of Trustees. Moritz Moritz will leave the indoor team to become the new coach.

"The addition of sand volleyball gives us the ability to add more opportunities for women to participate in intercollegiate athletics," athletics director Ray Tanner said.

Sand volleyball is huge in the Olympics, with Americans Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings winning the gold medal in London.
