RALEIGH, N.C. -

WNCN reporter Charlotte Huffman and photojournalist Dave Hattman won company-wide awards Friday for their series, "Poison in the Water,' which details problems with water in Wake Forest.

Huffman and Hattman won Media General's D. Tennant Bryan Award for Investigative Reporting in the large market category. There were entries from five other Media General properties. Media General, WNCN's parent company, is based in Richmond, Va.

Huffman and Hattman produced a series of reports on the problems with water in parts of Wake Forest, including a lengthy report on Oct. 25 that detailed the problems with trichloroethylene in the water. Their reporting included hours of combing through government documents and pointed interviews with state officials about the matter.

WNCN had a live report from an affected neighborhood Oct. 25, with many neighbors there watching Huffman and Hattman's report. After it aired, the neighbors applauded when Huffman came in the room.

The report continued WNCN's heavy emphasis on local reporting and investigative reports.

"This honor recognizes their hard work, dogged determination and tireless teamwork," WNCN General Manager Doug Hamilton told the staff. "Charlotte and Dave spent numerous hours slogging through woods, brush and dump sites to expose a problem with state-wide ramifications."

The awards are named for D. Tennant Bryan, who died in 1998 at the age of 92. He began his career as a reporter in 1928 for the family-owned Richmond, Va., News Leader and rose to the leadership of the company.
