McCrory, Tata to attend meeting about NC 12

Posted: Updated:
MANTEO, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory will attend a meeting about access to N.C. 12, the road that links Hatteras Island with the mainland.

Both McCrory and Transportation Secretary Tony Tata plan to attend a meeting Monday in Manteo about the fragile highway, which has been open intermittently on Hatteras Island over the past few days because of ocean overwash.

Officials will discuss an environmental assessment that identifies the preferred alternative as a permanent bridge where a temporary bridge is now located on Hatteras. Tata and McCrory plan to speak afterward. McCrory's office confirmed Monday that the governor would attend the meeting.

DOT is considering options for an area near Rodanthe, where overwash and standing sand can make the road impassable during a storm. Both options involve a bridge.
