Tudor: Grading ACC coaching performances

Posted: Updated:

Veteran sports writer Caulton Tudor is writing for WNCN during the March basketball run. Here is how he grades the ACC men's basketball coaches for the regular season:

A-LIST

Mike Krzyzewski, Duke: Nothing new here. He'll go to Greensboro as the ACC Tournament favorite after a regular-season riddled by injuries.

Jim Larranaga, Miami: The Hurricanes were a lot better in the middle of the schedule than early and late. Even so, it was an amazing run at times.

Roy Williams, North Carolina: A 12-6 record this season is impressive. New point guard, new interior, same old pressure to excel.

B-LIST

Tony Bennett, Virginia: Picked for seventh by coaches and the media, Bennett reeled in the fourth seed even with nonstop point-guard problems.

Mark Gottfried, N.C. State: Pack was picked to win the race and frequently disappointed, but Lorenzo Brown's injury took a toll.

C-LIST

Jeff Bzdelik, Wake Forest: Wins over Miami and State were encouraging but is the program really moving up? Probably not.

Steve Donahue, Boston College: The 7-11 record was better than expected from a young, mix-matched roster.

Brian Gregory, Georgia Tech: Six wins, four close losses, improving depth. It could have been a lot worse.

Leonard Hamilton, Florida State: The offense was a mess most of the way, but Devon Bookert's development has been a plus.

Mark Turgeon, Maryland: Wins over Duke and State were offset by late losses to BC and Georgia Tech.

D-LIST

Brad Brownell, Clemson: Five wins were at least two too few for a team with so much athleticism.

James Johnson, Virginia Tech: Maybe it'll work out for the best eventually, but Seth Greenberg would have won seven or so.
