NC House panel OKs bill to help with NFL stadium

Posted: Updated:

A state legislative proposal that could pay for most - but not all - renovations to the Carolina Panthers' stadium has cleared its first hurdle in the North Carolina General Assembly.
A House committee approved Thursday a bill that would give more latitude to the city of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County in how it can spend existing hotel and food and beverage taxes toward renovations the team wants at Bank of America Stadium.
The Panthers want to perform up to $297 million in upgrades and begin them after next season.
City leaders asked the Legislature to let them raise the food tax. Thursday's bill won't pay for all of the renovations but sponsor Rep. Ruth Samuelson of Charlotte says this is the best state lawmakers can do.
