ACC live blog: Carolina rolls by FSU

Posted: Updated:

WNCN is liveblogging all ACC Tournament games. Here's UNC's game on Friday night with Florida State.

11:41 p.m.: North Carolina has won this one, 83-62, in surprisingly easy fashion. No one expected the Seminoles to go down so easily. Big question though for UNC is the health of P.J. Hairston. Will update after the game.

11:36 p.m.:P.J. Hairston is not in the game for Carolina - will update his status as soon as we get word.

11:19 p.m.: Carolina now up 67-50 - Heels are playing with a lot of confidence.

11:03 p.m.: This is an odd game to watch, and an unusual Carolina team. Right now Roy Williams has Jackson Simmons in the game for extended minutes while James Michael McAdoo is on the bench. That means Carolina has no real post player in the game - Simmons is only 6-7 - and it looks like UNC is playing with four guys and a small forward. That's one reason Michael Snaer can drive to the basket and flip in a shot uncontested - there's no shot-blocker back there.

I mean, don't you think Williams would do anything for one more year with Warren Martin?

On the other hand, Simmons just gave Carolina some decent minutes. This is a long weekend in Greensboro for the teams that want to make a run, and resting some starters on Friday, if at all possible, is never a bad idea.

By the way, Reggie Bullock just hit a long three-pointer right in front of press row after a great pass from the other side of the court. Bullock shoots with a tremendous amount of confidence.

Carolina is up 57-43 now with 11:55 to play, and Carolina really looks quick on the court. That's one huge advantage of the smaller lineup, and in an era where few teams have big lineups, it's an advantage. Maryland is bigger but depends on its perimeter players.

10:55 p.m.: UNC is rolling a bit, forcing a Florida State timeout with the score 47-35, Heels. Dexter Strickland scored, P.J. Hairston hit a three-pointer, Marcus Paige scored on a layup and Reggie Bullock hit a three-pointer to give Carolina a comfortable margin.

There are plenty of Carolina fans here, as is often the case in Greensboro. Every UNC basket, especially the three-pointers, was met with a huge roar.

10:31 p.m.: It's halftime, and North Carolina finally has a bit of space on Florida State. The Tar Heels lead this one 35-27.

P.J. Hairston, no surprise, is the one pacing the Tar Heels. Hairston is from Greensboro, so you can imagine that this is a big night for him. And the Heels really need his shooting after struggling with their touch at the start of the first half. James Michael McAdoo has 10 points to help.

Florida State's Kiel Turpin leads the Seminoles, with eight points. But the Seminoles are having a hard time getting good looks against Carolina's defense. FSU has made only 10 of 27 shots and is 0-for-3 from three-point range.

Also hurting Florida State - the Seminoles have three assists and 10 turnovers. Ouch.

10:07 p.m.:You can tell the whole tournament just changed about an hour ago, when second-seeded Duke fell to Maryland. The Greensboro Coliseum is packed full of N.C. State and UNC fans, and both fan bases felt a jolt of energy when Duke went down.

As WNCN's Todd Gibson reported earlier today, the Blue Devils are a team you love or hate. Just like Carolina used to be (remember the ABC club - anybody but Carolina?) the Devils are the team to beat in the ACC now. That's what happens when you win 10 of 14 ACC Tournaments.

Duke is also the team State and Carolina would have the most trouble with. Miami is the top seed and quite good, but would anybody really bet with confidence that Miami will win this? Um, no.

The most talented team appears to be N.C. State, but the Wolfpack has a weary four-game road to the title.

North Carolina would make a run. Right now, the Heels are locked in a 21-20 battle with Florida State with 7:38 to play. The Tar Heels are only shooting 8 of 21 from the field.
