A battle is brewing over how much control cities and towns should have over the appearance of new homes and duplexes.
House Bill 150 has been sent to the House floor and will be brought up again for discussion March 19th, after sponsors drafted the bill, which would give municipalities less power to enforce zoning rules, that affect things such as the design and color of a home.
Supporters of the bill say local government over-reaches when it dictates what color a home should be, for example. Realtors and home builders are among the supporters, who say they want to provide buyers with more options.
Opponents, which include a number of Triangle mayors, including Raleigh's, say residents want uniformity and regulation.
McFarlane joined other mayors and the NC chapter of the American Planning Association and the North Carolina League of Municipalities Monday to formally oppose the bill.
