Moped driver dies after being hit by school bus

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A moped driver died Tuesday after being hit by a school bus Tuesday morning. Police identified the moped driver as Joe Cephus Shelton III, 41, of Clayton.

The bus, driven by Jimmy Eberhart, was turning left onto Edwards Mill Road from Chapel Hill Road, at the time of the accident. Police said Shelton was traveling west on Chapel Hill Road. Evidence at the scene showed the headlight of the moped was not on.

One lane of Chapel Hill Road near Edwards Mill Road was closed in Raleigh due to the accident.

The accident happened before 6:30 a.m. Tuesday. 

No students were on the bus at the time of the crash. Shelton was seriously injured and taken to WakeMed after the accident.
