RALEIGH, N.C. -
The General Assembly is getting its first crack at asking questions publicly about Pat McCrory's first spending proposal as North Carolina governor.
Members of the House and Senate budget committee prepared to meet jointly Thursday morning to hear a presentation from McCrory's budget team about the 2-year state government spending plan he released Wednesday, and to ask questions.
McCrory wants to spend 2 percent more in state dollars compared to the current year, for a total of $20.6 billion. The proposal has no new taxes and sets aside nearly $1 billion in reserves over two years for things like building repairs, information technology upgrades and potential Medicaid shortfalls.
McCrory says his plan should be a very serious starting point for fellow Republicans at the General Assembly assembling their own budget.
