Prosecutors: Fort Bragg general facing sex charges threatened accuser

Posted: Updated:

Attorneys for a Fort Bragg brigadier general accused of sexually assaulting five women argued in court today that his sexual relations with female subordinates were consensual and not forced.

Jeff Sinclair, a 27-year army veteran, faces a long list of charges including forcible sodomy, wrongful sexual conduct, violating orders and adultery during his time in Afghanistan.

Today lawyers argued over whether a chain of emails between some of Sinclair's superiors should be turned over to the defense as evidence. The defense hopes some of those emails could poke holes in the testimony of one of Sinclair's accusers, showing the sexual relationship was consensual and not forced.

Prosecutors argued they didn't know if some of those alleged emails even existed.

In a separate motion, the defense argued another batch of Sinclair's personal emails were obtained by the prosecution illegally. Prosecutors say they hope to use those emails to show he threatened his accusers.

The judge has not yet ruled on either motion.

Monday's hearing was part of a series of pretrial hearings leading up to the court martial set for late June.

For the most serious charges, Sinclair could face life in prison.
