Eugenics compensation bill to be introduced today

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

A bill that would compensate victims of forced sterilization will be introduced Wednesday.

If the proposal passes, each victim of the state's eugenics program, which ended in the 1970s, would get $50,000. According to the Justice for Sterilization Victims Foundation, 168 of the victims are still living.

Gov. Pat McCrory's budget has set aside $10 million for the victims, but lawmakers say the state doesn't have that kind of money.

A similar bill to compensate sterilization victims failed in the senate last October.
