Gottfried on Twitter: Committed to being at NC State

Posted: Updated:

N.C. State head basketball coach Mark Gottfried's name has popped up as a potential candidate for the vacancy at UCLA. But a recently renegotiated contract might make it expensive for him to leave.

And Gottfried has taken to Twitter to say he is happy in his current post. In a Tweet that went out late Wednesday night, Gottfried wrote:

"#WPN I am committed to being at @NCState for a long time Still as dedicated to rebuilding the program as I was 2 yrs ago when I arrived"

The #WPN hashtag refers to "Wolfpack Nation."

After UCLA fired head basketball coach Ben Howland Sunday, a list of names to replace him started to pop up.

Howland was let go after 10 seasons that included three Final Four appearances. But the Bruins were knocked out of this year's tournament during the field of 64.

Howland's contract had two years left and included a $2.3 million buyout.

The LA Times reported Monday that an immediate wish list included Shaka Smart of VCU and Brad Stevens of Butler.

Both Smart and Stevens have been hot commodities on the coaching circuit, turning down several head coaching jobs over the past couple years.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported Wednesday that VCU is working on a restructured contract for Smart. VCU also worked with Smart after last season to keep him as head coach of the Ram's through 2020.

Gottfried's name has started to appear across Internet sports blogs as another name on UCLA's wish list. Gottfried spent eight seasons as an assistant at UCLA before leaving to take the head coaching job at Murray State in 1995.

Adam Zagoria, of zagsblog.com, began reporting Tuesday that not only do UCLA boosters want Gottfried, but that Gottfried himself wants the job.

Like Smart, Gottfried had his contract renegotiated after last season. The reworked contract includes a buyout clause for his base salary of $750,000 for each of the five seasons remaining on his contract.

Any school looking to hire Gottfried away from the Wolfpack will have to pay $3.75 million.

Gottfried may be a wanted man by UCLA, but a combined price tag of $6.05 million between the buyouts of Howland and Gottfried will cost the Bruins dearly.
