McCrory names 3 law enforcement leaders

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory has announced his choices to run three North Carolina law enforcement agencies.

Col. William J. Grey of Cary was sworn in Thursday as commander of the North Carolina Highway Patrol during a ceremony in the old Capitol.

FBI special agent Gregory K. Baker of Raleigh has been chosen as director of Alcohol Law Enforcement. The agency enforces the state's alcohol, tobacco, lottery and gambling laws.

Clayton Police Chief Glen B. Allen has been chosen as head of the State Capitol Police. The agency provides security for workers and visitors at the state government complex in downtown Raleigh. The agency has been without a permanent chief since last summer, when Chief Scott Hunter died.

Baker and Allen will be sworn in later, after completing duties at their current jobs.

"These men have compiled exemplary records in law enforcement and are well equipped to carry out their new responsibilities," McCrory said. "Protecting the public is the top priority for this agency, and I have every confidence that this team and its collaborative efforts will serve North Carolina well."

Grey, 52, grew up Winston-Salem and served as a Marine before joining the Highway Patrol in 1991.

Baker, 49, is an Oklahoma native who joined the FBI in 1985.

Allen, 54, is from Henderson, and has served with police departments in his hometown and Wilson before becoming the chief in Clayton in 2006.
