NEW YORK -

The eldest daughter of former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards bristled when asked about Rielle Hunter in an exclusive interview with NBC.

Cate Edwards spoke with Savannah Guthrie of the Today show.

Hunter later wrote a book in which she was highly critical of Elizabeth Edwards, who had died of cancer in December 2010. Hunter wrote that Elizabeth was a "witch on wheels."

Asked about Hunter's comments in the book, Cate Edwards responded, "I just thought it was — I thought it was a poor choice, I guess, is all I can say."

Cate Edwards said it was difficult to watch the experience her parents went through after her father told her he'd had an affair with  Hunter.

"I was devastated," she said. "And I was disappointed. I mean, these are my parents. I had grown up with a lot of love in my family. And it was hard to see them go through this."

Cate also stood by her fathers side during his  campaign finance fraud trial. The case ended in a mistrial last May when jurors acquitted him on one of six charges but were unable to decide whether he misused money from two wealthy donors to hide his pregnant mistress while he ran for president.
