Tudor: Brown helped revitalize NC State

Posted: Updated:

Lorenzo Brown's jersey No. 2 may never get hoisted alongside those of David Thompson, Tommy Burleson, Thurl Bailey and Dereck Whittenburg (among others) in the PNC Center rafters, but Brown has played an important role in N.C. State basketball.

When Mark Gottfried was hired to replace Sidney Lowe as coach in April of 2011, the Wolfpack's point guard of the present and future was Ryan Harrow.

Within a matter of weeks, Harrow transferred to Kentucky, leaving the new coach with little choice except to switch Brown, a rising sophomore, from the wing to the point.

The only alternative would have been to go with a senior transfer -- 5-foot-10 Alex Johnson -- which would have put Gottfried in the tricky position of having two different primary playmakers in his first two seasons.

Brown made it work well enough for the Wolfpack to reach two straight NCAA tournaments, and he did so while dealing with injuries at times and unpredictable teammates at other times.

When Brown announced Thursday that he would skip his senior season in hopes of landing in the NBA, there was little surprise and less hoopla.

The team is about a week removed from a thoroughly disappointing loss to Temple in its first NCAA game, and it's been generally assumed for weeks that Brown -- and fellow junior C.J. Leslie -- would enter the NBA pool.

But State fans can only hope that Brown's successor -- probably teammate Tyler Lewis and/or incoming recruit Anthony Barber -- makes such a seamless adjustment to a demanding position.
