DURHAM, N.C. -

The Durham Historic Preservation Commission voted Tuesday to approve a new 26-story high-rise downtown that would significantly alter the Durham landscape.

Only Andrew Sprouse voted against the proposal. He objected to the height and the impact it would have on the neighboring Hill building. That 17-story building rose in 1937.

Austin Lawrence Partners purchased the site along Main, Corcoran and Parrish Streets to construct the mixed-use building that will incorporate and preserve five historic facades.

The developers plan for the building to contain 60 percent residential space and 40 percent office and retail, including shops on the ground floor.

Developers said the plan preserved five historic facades and incorporated them into the plan. Building could start as early as November.

The public can discuss the proposal at a neighborhood group meeting on Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at the Carrack Modern Gallery at 111 W. Parrish Street.

The University Tower in Durham, located west of downtown toward Chapel Hill, is also a 17-story building.

Raleigh's PNC Plaza is 33 stories and the Wells Fargo Capital Center is 30 stories. The BB&T building in downtown Raleigh is 29 stories.

The Durham Centre in downtown Durham is 15 stories.
