NC House committee to host voter ID discussion

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A North Carolina House panel is bringing in out-of-state officials for a hearing discussing how new voter ID laws have affected their states.

The House Elections Committee is slated to host Ion Sancho, the elections supervisor in Florida's Leon County, and Georgia Secretary of State Brian Kemp, during a regular committee meeting on Wednesday.

The hearing is the latest in a series of meetings designed to gather input on the heated issue before legislators submit a bill.

An effort in 2011 passed the General Assembly but was vetoed by former Gov. Beverly Perdue. Although the 2011 bill failed, Republicans now hold larger majorities in both chambers and carry the support of Gov. Pat McCrory.

GOP legislators have predicted the full House will vote on new legislation by mid-April.
