Hoke Co. man shoots self in head with crossbow

Posted: Updated:
RAEFORD, N.C. -

A Hoke County man shot himself in the head with a crossbow Thursday morning, according to the Hoke County Sheriff's Office.

The man's mother called authorities to a residence on St. Pauls Road after going to wake him and finding the arrow in his skull. Authorities believe the stabilizing feathers prevented the arrow from exiting the man's head.

The victim was alert and conscious when deputies arrived. Deputies reported that the man claimed to have mental illness and told them he shot himself.

The Hoke County Sheriff's Office did not release the condition of the man after he was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center.
