Cherry blossoms slow to arrive in Washington

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON -

Unseasonably colder temperatures have pushed back the expected dates of Washington D.C.'s Cherry Blossom Festival.

Officials with the National Park Services changed the dates as a response for the cherry blossoms to reach their peak. The peak bloom is defined as 70 percent of the cherry trees in bloom along the tidal basin.

With temperatures dipping into the 20s around areas of Washington D.C. the expectations of seeing the fully bloomed cherry blossoms around the tidal basin are postponed for another few days said by the National Park Service.

The original predicted peak period was to occur March 26-30,  but the NPS Now said the bloom dates will be from April 6 through April 8.

The cherry blossom blooming period can last up to 14 days.
