Survey: 52 percent of Americans believe pot should be legal

Posted: Updated:

Americans favor the legalization of marijuana for the first time in four decades of polling.

A new survey done by the Pew Research Center shows 52 percent of Americans believe pot should be legal, but 45 percent remain opposed. This is compared to a 1969 Gallup poll where only 12 percent favored legalization during that time.

Adults age 32 and younger are most supportive in the current poll and baby boomers are also backing the legalization of marijuana, a number that has doubled since 1994.

In the last three years the support for legalization has risen 11 points.

The Pew survey reports that 72 percent agree that government efforts to enforce marijuana laws cost more than the effort is worth.
