SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. -

Southern Pines Police have arrested a man who escaped police custody after being airlifted to Chapel Hill with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police arrested Larry Alexander Leverett Monday evening. Leverett was shot four times Thursday and airlifted to UNC Hospitals, where he fled the hospital 24 hours after being admitted.

Authorities learned of outstanding warrants for Leverett and placed him in the custody of the University of North Carolina Police Department while being treated for his injuries.

Another victim in the shooting was transported to Moore County Regional Hospital by a private vehicle.

Leverett was never under arrest while at the hospital, according to Tom Smith, Director of UNC Hospital Police. Smith said that UNC Hospital police were working with other law enforcement agencies to arrest Leverett before he left. Leverett left the hospital without being formally discharged and against medical advice, according to Smith.

Southern Pines police say that have no suspects in custody related to the drive-by shooting that injured Leverett. A fire broke out at the same address on Richards Street as the drive-by shooting Friday night around 10 p.m., according to Chief Mike Cameron with Southern Pines Fire and Rescue.

Cameron said the apartment suffered significant damage and is uninhabitable.

Authorities believe arson is the source of the fire but do not have any suspects in custody at this time.
