NC House to debate voter ID bill in committee

Posted: Updated:

The North Carolina House is set to debate a bill requiring voters to present photo identification at the polls.

The measure hits the House Elections Committee Wednesday after bill architects changed the proposal to allow for free state-issued IDs for all. The first possible vote also comes amid the release of new State Board of Elections data cutting by nearly half previous projections that 612,000 voters lack identification.

Opponents argue any barrier to voting is unconstitutional and the problem of fraud at the polls is virtually non-existent. Some critics say the recent change allowing for free IDs without claiming financial hardship is designed to help the bill clear court battles, and the new projections don't justify any new restrictions.
