RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina's flagship public university is hiring a full-time coordinator for sexual harassment and discrimination issues as a federal agency investigates allegations about the way it handles sexual assault cases.

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill says besides hiring a Title IX specialist, it will review ahead of next fall how student-on-student complaints of sexual harassment are handled.

The U.S. Education Department's Office for Civil Rights is investigating a complaint from three students, a former student and a former assistant dean of students saying UNC-CH mishandles sexual abuse cases.

The federal Title IX law requires universities that receive federal funding to respond to sexual discrimination or sexual violence allegations. UNC-Chapel Hill officials say universities are required to provide an alternative complaint resolution process even when police are involved.
