RALEIGH, N.C. -

The man accused of stabbing his best friends wife to death has been formally charged with murder and made his first court appearance Tuesday.

Jonathan Broyhill, who appeared in a wheelchair and prison suit, is charged with killing Jamie Hahn by stabbing her in her North Raleigh home last Monday. She died two days later.

Broyhill was treated at WakeMed for self-inflicted wounds to his wrists.

Broyhill grew up in Lenoir with Nation Hahn, Jamie Hahn's husband, and was extremely close to the Hahns, working with Jamie at her political consulting firm, Sky Blue Strategies.

Broyhill's mother, Kay, expressed shock over what happened in a statement released Monday:
"Our family is still reeling from the shock of what happened last Monday," she said. "Our hearts are broken for the Kirk-Hahn families and we pray God will bring His peace and comfort to them in their grieving. Jon has always had a sweet gentle nature and been loved by all who knows him. We will continue to love him and support him in any way we can."

According to neighbors on Glascock Street in Raleigh, Broyhill was renting a room at a home owned by another woman. No one was home when WNCN knocked on the door. Neighbors say the woman who owns the house is too distraught to stay there, and is staying at another place.

The neighbors said they used to see Broyhill out on the porch on his laptop, doing political work.

They also said police removed computers from the property earlier in the week, and Broyhill's family was at the home Monday removing his items.

Broyhill is being held at a  Central Prison in Raleigh, where there is a medical facility for him to be treated.
