March, rally will mark May Day in NC

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

Worker and immigrant rights advocates will hold a rally in Raleigh in support of what they're calling a people's agenda.

Demonstrators will rally Wednesday evening for good jobs and living wages; the right to collective bargaining; and support for lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people, among other issues.

The event will begin at 3 p.m. with a teach-in at Moore Square. Participants will begin to march at 4 p.m. in Moore Square and make stops along the way before ending at 6 p.m. at Halifax Mall, where the rally will begin.

May 1 is celebrated around the world as International Workers Day.  It was born in Chicago after the 1886 Haymarket Massacre, where police fired on workers during a general strike for the eight-hour workday.
