Triangle theaters have seats for 'Iron Man 3' tonight

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The highly anticipated film "Iron Man" opens tonight in the United States, with multiple showings in the Triangle.

After its international release nine days ago, the film has already grossed an estimated $307.7 million, according to Entertainment Weekly.

"Iron Man 3" is the third movie in the Iron Man series and the seventh installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film stars two-time Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr. as the eccentric billionaire Tony Stark and Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, his secretary and love interest. The cast also includes big names such as Don Cheadle, Guy Pierce and Ben Kingsley.

The film was shot primarily in North Carolina, in locations throughout the state including Wilmington, Raleigh, Cary, Oak Island, Rose Hill and Kenansville. Marvel cryptically describes the storyline as a fight between Stark and an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands and embarks on a quest to find those responsible. As he concludes his journey, he discovers an answer to the question that has haunted him throughout the series: Does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Though the film officially opens Friday, many theatres have at least one show before midnight tonight.
