Pinellas mower victim could go home tomorrow

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

The 2-year-old girl who lost her feet in a mower accident, and has been in the hospital for weeks, is scheduled to go home on Saturday morning.

Dennis Reid, the pastor of the Nugent family's church, says Ireland Nugent will be released from Tampa General Hospital at 10:30 AM on Saturday, after doctors consult with her parents.

Ireland lost her feet and hurt one of her hands when her father accidentally ran over her with a riding mower.  Ireland has endured seven surgeries and one major setback. Last week, doctors found an infection in one of her legs and she had to have a skin graft.

Her father Jerry says it's been difficult to explain to his daughter what happened.

"She's still very young, so she's not grasping it totally," he said. "When she asks about her limbs, we just say you're going to have new feet, just like Winter the dolphin."

Ireland received a toy of Winter, the dolphin that has a prosthetic tail. The Nugents say they are trying to use that to teach her.

The community has rallied around the girl and her family. Chick-fil-A has announced that restaurants in Pinellas and Pasco counties will hold a fundraiser for Ireland on Wednesday, May 8 from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM. A percentage of all restaurants' sales will be donated to the Ireland Nugent Trust.

Participating restaurants are those in New Port Richey and Pinellas County, including Clearwater, Oldsmar, Palm Harbor, Pinellas Park, Largo, Seminole and St. Petersburg.
