NEW BERN, N.C. -

The mayor of New Bern has been charged with DWI.

Mayor Lee Bettis was charged with DWI, failure to maintain lane control and, designated lane violation. He was pulled Monday morning in Havelock.

The town of Havelock said it all started around 7:49 a.m. when the Havelock Emergency Communications Center got two 911 calls from concerned motorists about a vehicle being operated in a dangerous manner.

Officers spotted the vehicle and initiated a stop on the Chevrolet van traveling west on Highway 70 near the city limits. They identified the driver of the van as 49-year-old Bettis. Two children were passengers in the vehicle.

Lawmen administered several Field Sobriety Tests on Bettis and found cause to arrest him for Driving While Impaired. He consented to a blood draw to be analyzed by the SBI lab for alcohol and any other controlled substances.

He's already bonded out of jail. His next court date is set for July 18.
