SELMA, N.C. -

Two people are injured from a small, single-engine plane crash in Johnston County, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

Around 7:30 p.m., a Piper J3 aircraft clipped power lines and crashed while inverted off Highway 96 near Selma, the FAA said. Two people were in the plane when it crashed.

The FAA said Lynwood Oakley, 64, and his flying student, Elaina Essey, 24, sustained serious injuries. Authorities told WNCN that both passengers were conscious and transported to WakeMed for treatment.

Fuel spilled from the aircraft but did not result in a fire.

A neighbor watched it all happen and called 911.  Justin Haggerty says the pilot was conscious upon landing and was apparently able to nurse a wound to his head while waiting for help to arrive.

"When they pulled the guy out, the first thing I noticed was he had apparently, when he was in the plane, had a gash on his head and made a makeshift bandage for it because he already had something wrapped around his head when he was being pulled out of the plane," Justin Haggerty said.

The FAA will being investigating the crash Friday morning.

WNCN will release more information as it becomes available.
