Wake Forest mom hounded by bank after military son's death

Posted: Updated:
WAKE FOREST, N.C. -

Nearly 200,000 people have signed a petition in support of a Wake Forest mother who lost her son to suicide but is now faced with her son's student loan debt.

Kim Akers lost her son Cameron, am Air Force vet, more than a year ago when he took his life after suffering a brain injury. Akers co-signed her son's private student loan, and when he died, she says Key Bank started hounding her to collect his debt.

"When they started calling, it was like, 'Oh my God, what do I do?'" Akers said. "Really, I'm still in shock. I try not to think about him as being gone."

Akers started a petition on Change.org and says the bank did eventually waive half the $12,000 debt but continues to demand the remaining $6,000.

She says other banks have clear policies of forgiving debt for all dead family members. She wants Key Bank to do the same.

Key Bank says it has adopted new policies to waive debt for enrolled college students who die or students who die within six months of graduating. However that policy does not apply to people like Cameron.

The bank can't say if it will re-evaluating his case after the petition.
