Lakeland Police: new vehicle will help fight DUI

Posted: Updated:
LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

Lakeland Police have a new tool to fight drunk driving.

It's a new, 2013 Ford Explorer-Police Interceptor. The vehicle is equipped with a brand new Intoxilyzer 8000 device. Police believe it will decrease the time needed to investigate a drunk driver, possibly by as much as 45 minutes, because the Intoxilyzer 8000 allows police to conduct the entire investigation, including the breath test.

The Intoxilyzer 8000 was donated to the Lakeland Police Department by Impaired Driving Education & Awareness, or I.D.E.A., a non-profit organization.

The new vehicle provides enough room to allow for the equipment needed to conduct serious traffic crash investigations at the scene. Police say this will allow them to release the patrol units to their normal duties, such as, answering calls for service and crime prevention.
