Florida ranks in top ten for dog bites

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

A report from State Farm ranks Florida in the top ten states for dog bite claims. In 2012, State Farm says it had 123 dog bite claims and paid out $7.1 million. The 123 claims ranked Florida 8th in the country. California ranked number one, followed by Illinois and Texas. Nationwide, State Farm paid about $108 million in dog bite claims in 2012.

Next week kicks off National Dog Bite Prevention Week. A coalition of companies, including State Farm, use National Dog Bite Prevention Week to raise awareness about the dangers of dog bites. State Farm says there are more than 4.7 million dog bites every year.

The National Dog Bite Prevention Coalition has some tips for being a responsible dog owner:

-Never leave a baby or small child alone with a dog.
-Never put your dog in a position where it feels threatened or teased.
-Use a leash in public to keep control of your dog.
