Medicaid converts to NC FAST; benefit delays possible

GREENVILLE, N.C. -

Many of you have called, emailed, Facebooked and Tweeted 9 On Your Side about delayed Social Security benefits putting your family in a bind.

Our investigation found it was a new computer system causing the delay with food stamps and we're now learning Medicaid benefits could soon see the same delay.

The North Carolina Families Accessing Services through Technology or "NC FAST" program has been anything but fast.

Come June 30th, the Electronic Benefits Transfer card files will be fully implemented; meaning people should see fewer issues receiving these benefits but in August Medicaid will begin the conversion to the same program.

We asked if we'll see the same problems.

"Hopefully we will not see that because some of the individuals who receive food and nutrition services also receive Medicaid," said George Perry, Director of the Pitt County Department of Social Services.

Perry says there will be less files to transfer over, compared to the more than 2,200 EBT files they'll soon be finishing up.

He's even requested six additional temporary workers, adding to a total of 14 people whose only job is to convert the files into NC FAST.

So when will all of the headaches end?

Perry says everything should be rolled over by November or December of this year. He says those who receive benefits will not have to do anything differently.
