Pet poop problem has Raleigh mulling park crackdown

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The city of Raleigh is considering a ban on pets in certain areas of parks, the city said Thursday.

In particular, the city is particularly looking at whether pets should be allowed on athletic fields and playgrounds after hearing from citizens about the matter. The city said it has received complaints from the public about the interaction between dogs and children on playgrounds, and on pet waste being left on athletic fields.

The city said people often let their dogs run without a leash on park grounds, and that fenced athletic fields have become common areas for people to let their pets roam.

Under city codes, pet owners are supposed to dispose of their pet's waste. Also, pets are not supposed to run around parks without being on a leash, except in certain dog parks.

The Greenways and Urban Tree Committee of the Parks, Recreation and Greenway Advisory Board is seeking public input from residents on the issue at its meeting May 22 at 6 p.m. in Room 303 of the Avery C. Upchurch Government Complex at 222 W. Hargett Street.

The committee will review the issue and then make a recommendation to the Parks, Recreation, and Greenway Advisory Board.
