Proposed Harnett Co. shooting range draws ire

A proposed shooting range in Harnett County is causing a lot of tension between long time residents who say they don't want it in their backyard and the owner of the property.

The gun range would be located on the 54 acres of land Chuck Smith owns just west of N.C. 87 near Pineview.

The Harnett County Planning Board has been hearing testimonies all week, and tonight the board is expected to decide if it will grant Smith with a conditional permit. If approved, the shooting range will be called the "All American Gun Club."

Norman and Diana Smith live right next to the proposed shooting range and say they were upset when they found out about it a few months ago. A family member close by showed them a letter from Chuck Smith that explains what he hopes to do with his property.

"In an area that is classified as residential and conservative, and we are here already, why would they allow infringing the safety of us instead of putting this gun range away from residences?" Diana Smith asked.

Harnett County is no stranger to this sort of controversy. For more than a year, Drake Landing has been at the center of one for its shooting range and its proximity to homes.

Tommy Kellam also lives near the area in question and says he is not against guns, just worried about safety and the noise.

He said if the board approves the conditional permit tonight, "I'm going to take it as far as I can. I don't have a lot of money, I don't have deep pockets. A lot of these people building it, they have deep pockets."

WNCN reached out to Chuck Smith but he was not available for comment.
