Termite season heats up in the Bay Area

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

The weather is getting warm in the bay area and pest control experts say it's bringing out dry wood termites.

"The phones are ringing off the hook now because the termites are swarming," said exterminator Brian Gervais. "It's getting hot. Once it reaches a certain temperature, they're coming out."

Gervais works for Best Termite and Pest Control. He said homeowners should not wait to call a professional if they see signs of termites, which include iridescent wings, sawdust-like debris on the floor, or swarms of termites. He said once a homeowner notices a termite colony at, it has already been in the home for three to five years.

"They can cause some serious damage," he said. "We've been on some roofs where you literally fall through because the wood is like a sponge."

Gervais said the best way to get rid of the pests is with tent fumigation. Monday he tented the Seminole Heights home of Ryan DeJong. DeJong first noticed signs of termites six months ago, when he was considering buying his home.

"I had hoped it was something that would maybe just go away. Something that maybe we could treat with some spray," DeJong said.

When he finalized the deal several weeks ago, he knew it was time to address the termite problem.

"If there's any sign of them, I'm told you're supposed to take action," he said.

The process of tenting a home takes several days. Pest control experts pump a deadly gas into the home, which takes 24 hours to kill the bugs. It takes another 24 hours to air out the home.

DeJong should be able to move back in on Wednesday, with the peace of mind the termites are gone.

"They gave us a three year warranty," he said. "So I suspect they know what they're doing."

But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
