RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Wake County high school coach has been suspended after being charged with sexual offense with a student.

Police charged 42-year-old Jamie Ayers with three counts of sex offense with a female student. Ayers is the softball coach at Wakefield High School.

The judge raised his bond to $100,000 after the prosecutor said the state was checking to see if the relationship with the student began before she was 16.

According arrest warrants, criminal violations began in June 2011 through March 2013.

Ayers has worked for the Wake County Public School System since 1998. He worked at Cary High, East Cary Middle, Wakefield Middle and currently Wakefield High as a Health and Physical Education teacher.

As of Monday, Ayers was suspended with pay.

His next court date is June 11 at 2 p.m. He will have a court-appointed lawyer.

Ayers did not comment.

At Wakefield, though, many of the students were talking about the coach's arrest.

"I'm not so sure  if it's true or not - I don't know whether to believe it or not," said junior Ray Watson. "It's crazy though. The whole school is talking about it."

And senior Breanna Moss said, "I can't really grasp my whole head around it because he wasn't that type of person to do things like that — I mean, he didn't act like that towards the team."
