NORTH TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. -

A star high school football player set to graduate a few weeks from now drowned off the North Carolina  coast Thursday night.

North Topsail Police tell 9 On Your Side Southwest Onslow High School quarterback Shak Pershey went missing while swimming with some friends around 7 o'clock.

The Coast Guard and a Marine Corps helicopter were called in, but rough seas led them to suspend their water and air search after two hours.

Police continued scouring the area and found Pershey's body around 2 o'clock Friday morning off North Topsail Beach.

"I believe the young man may have been caught in some sort of cross current that may have pulled him down," said Stuart Turille, town manager of North Topsail Beach.

The assistant superintendent at Southwest Onslow says about a dozen grief counselors are on-hand for students.

As starting quarterback, Pershey led his team to win the state championship in December. He would have graduated June 11th and was set to attend Chowan University, said assistant superintendent Barry Collins.

A vigil was held for Pershey at North Topsail Beach on Friday night.
