McCrory urges North Carolinians to be ready for hurricanes

RALEIGH, N.C. -

Gov. Pat McCrory urged North Carolinians to be prepared for hurricanes as the state faces the 2013 Atlantic season.

Saturday marks the start of the hurricane season, which continues through Nov. 30.

"We all hope for a slow season but we never know," McCrory said. "It's always best to be fully prepared."

McCrory urged North Carolinians to contribute to those in need in Oklahoma after the tornadoes hit, and said what happened in that state is a reminder that disasters "can happen at a moment's notice. The better we are prepared the better job we will do."

Federal forecasters are calling for 13 to 20 named Atlantic storms, seven to 11 that strengthen into hurricanes and three to six that become major hurricanes. A normal year has 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major storms with winds over 110 mph.

McCrory said he had put money in his proposed budget to make sure the state has what it needs to handle a storm.

"That was one of my first priorities," he said. "I did not think we had enough in the reserve and I'll fight to keep that money in the budget.:

Kieran Shanahan, the secretary of the N.C. Department of Public Safety, said that North Carolinians should:

* Assemble an emergency kit

* Have five to seven days worth of any medicines needed

* Know how to get to higher ground

* Stay informed about potential storms

Last year, Superstorm Sandy hit the East Coast, although it wasn't a hurricane when it made landfall in New Jersey in October. Sandy caused damage in North Carolina, including closing N.C. Highway 12 along Hatteras Island.

The road reopened in December.
