Retooled NC tax package OK'd by House budget panel

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A reunited House Republican caucus has advanced a new version of a tax overhaul package that would cost the state of North Carolina more revenue to implement than the GOP's original plan.

The House Appropriations Committee voted along party lines Thursday for a measure that would cut income tax rates while expanding the scope of the sales tax to cover warranties and more services like car repairs.

A version of the plan got derailed this week when Republicans split on removing a cap for individual income tax deductions for mortgage interest and charitable contributions.

The new bill heading to the House floor Friday would retain the cap for mortgage interest and property taxes only.

Democrats opposed the bill. They said the state needs to retain revenues to boost vital programs.
